Producer of 'Not Just A Pretty Face' Poon Ka Tak: "Roger and Joey have a strong comedic talent"

[Ming Pao]

All you have to do is switch on the TV [in Hong Kong] and you can watch three of Poon Ka Tak's productions: in the afternoon there is "Miu Gai Ma Hing Dai" (Street Fighters) and "Fan Cheen Fan Hou" (The Awakening Story) and in the evening "Mei Lai Joi Mong" (Not Just A Pretty Face). After joining TVB's training class in 1974, the past thirty years have been fruitful for productions that Mr Poon has had a part in, the first being Liza Wang's "Sei Gwai Ching" (Four Seasons Love) and as producer of "Ying See Jing Chap Dong On" (Detective Investigation Files) reaching the admirable result of four series. Producer Poon's latest creation "Not Just A Pretty Face" has the new combination of Joey Yung and Roger Kwok and he cannot stop singing Joey's praises.

"Joey has a happy personality and is a great sport and that is the best foundation for a comedy actor, as for Roger we have known each other since the days of 'City Stories' and in last years' 'Ngong Fu Sing Lung' (Square Pegs) he has already had his comedy potential tapped. This time, I hope that the story will send out the message that you shouldn't judge a person by their looks as personality and manners are more important and also that education through the family is very important to a person's maturity."

In the show, Joey's 'ugly look' is a feature of the whole series and with many female singers very worried about their looks and not wanting to show the audience their ugly sides, Poon Ka Tak laughs that Joey complained about there not being enough ugly scenes. "At first when Joey heard the story pitch, she felt touched because she thought back to when she first entered showbiz, she was often laughed at and criticised. Joey does not have an attitude and is hardworking, understanding the hardship of making series and letting me direct her as I pleased." If he had to grade her, Mr Poon says that she is still lacking in experience in some areas, but her performance is above 90%; as for Roger, he is outstanding and gets 100%.

With reports that singers are making more and more TV serials, as far as Poon Ka Tak can remember, there have always been singing stars in a lot of productions, as for the rumours that they make series in exchange for awards, he says this is not to be believed. "Casting a role is all about the suitability to that role and the wrong person will not be chosen, as far as I am concerned, singing and acting stars are all under the same sky and they shouldn't be split so clearly."
